The aortic valve is one of the heart's four valves. It serves as the outlet valve for the heart and separates the left ventricle and aorta. This is the valve most frequently affected by different diseases at different ages; its dysfunction may lead to relevant symptoms, and ultimately to heart failure or death. Early diagnosis is important in order to prevent serious complications.
Problems of the aortic valve may be due to congenital malformations (e.g. bicuspid anatomy), enlargement of the part of the aorta where it is located, or degeneration over time. The prominent dysfunction may be a narrowing (aortic stenosis) or a leak (aortic regurgitation).
The classic treatment for diseased aortic valves is replacement with a prosthesis. In recent years, new prostheses have been developed that can be inserted via a catheter-based approach. Over the past 15 years, strategies have been developed that allow reconstruction of leaking aortic valves, either in aortic aneurysm or for deformed valves. Aortic valve repair has been shown to improve both patient quality of life and long-term survival.
At ICTA we provide all of these treatment modalities. Our group has pioneered aortic valve replacement techniques in Spain, gained significant experience in this area and become a reference point in the field. The world's foremost authority on aortic valve repair is a member of our team: Prof. Schäfers has accumulated the most extensive experience in aortic valve preservation and reconstruction.
Thanks to the availability of the material and technological resources necessary to undertake these complex procedures, and above all thanks to the experience of the whole team of cardiologists and surgeons, we can offer comprehensive treatment of aortic valve pathologies, repairing valves where possible or substituting them where it is not (Ross procedure, prosthetic substitutes, etc.).
